The UK is recognised worldwide for its remarkable history and culture. There are many beautiful historic homes across the country, some of which are around 800 years old. From towering manor homes to medieval marvels, it’s beautiful to imagine the past lives of the homes we live in – some even choose their home based on its history.
How do I find out my home’s history?
If you have an older house, you could:
- search 2,000 properties recorded in the 1862 Act register
- check your local archives, such as parish records, county record offices or your local library
- look at census returns made at ten-year intervals between 1841 and 1911 to find a first mention of the address
- see if your house is listed in Historic England's National Heritage List for England
- explore historical editions of Ordnance Survey maps
- consider the architectural style and features of the house, such as the type of roof and position of windows
- contact a local history society
- flag down a passing amateur historian!
